Superintendent Daniel A. Domenech, who came to the United States from Cuba as a child, has declared “Diversity ... Challenge and Opportunity” as the theme for his year as president of the American Association of School Administrators.

The superintendent of the Fairfax County, Va., district was installed as the head of the 15,000-member AASA last month during the Arlington, Va.-based organization’s annual conference in New Orleans.

“If we do not value our minority children, then we are unlikely to bring their achievement levels up to the levels of majority children,” Mr. Domenech said.

Mr. Domenech, 52, has led the 150,000-student Fairfax County district in suburban Washington since last November. He plans to take up his AASA post in July, when he begins his official duties.

During the conference, Joseph Cirasuolo, the superintendent of the 7,000-student Wallingford, Conn., schools, was installed as president-elect.

Jacksonville (Fla.) University has tapped a 30-year education veteran who worked his way up in the 125,000-student Duval district to lead its school of education.

Alvin G. White, 60, is the chief district operating officer for the Duval County schools in Jacksonville. A Jacksonville native, Mr. White began his career in the district as a mathematics and physical education teacher.

He also has served as the principal of two high schools and as the district’s assistant superintendent for desegregation and human resources.

Mr. White will assume his new duties as the director of the education school July 15.

High school senior Josh Peck may have a career ahead of him with the World Wrestling Federation.

The 18-year-old from Butte, Mont., was named “manager of the year” by Wrestling USA, a magazine that spotlights amateur wrestling.

Mr. Peck manages the football and wrestling programs at the 1,650-student Butte High School; asthma kept him from participating on either team.

He is also the senior class president and the student body representative on the Butte school board.
