Superintendent James A. Williams of the Dayton, Ohio, schools has been honored with the 1996 Richard R. Green Award by the Council of the Great City Schools.
Mr. Williams, who has been with the 27,000-student district since 1991, received the award during the council’s conference last month in Minneapolis.
The award recognizes innovation, leadership, community involvement, and professionalism among educators within the 48 urban school districts that make up the council. Mr. Williams will receive a $10,000 scholarship to present to a Dayton student.
Among his accomplishments in the district are several new programs, including partnerships with local universities and colleges, an updated science curriculum, and expanded training opportunities for teachers.
Daniel A.Domenech, the superintendent of a regional board that oversees 18 school districts in western Suffolk County on Long Island, N.Y., has been named the president-elect of the American Association of School Administrators.
Mr. Domenech was a finalist last year during the search to replace Chancellor Ramon C. Cortines of the New York City schools, and has also served on a state panel appointed to oversee the 2,600-student Roosevelt district on Long Island.
He will assume his one-year term as president-elect of the 15,000-member AASA, based in Arlington, Va., in July.
Actor Bill Cosby received the College Board Medal for his “distinguished service to education” during the board’s annual conference in New York City last month. In its citation, the board commended Mr. Cosby for “leadership, service, and commitment to the fundamental values of educational opportunity and excellence.” The citation also honored Mr. Cosby for contributions to society during his career as “one of the most influential entertainers” of the late 20th century. ... The College Board, which administers the SAT college-entrance exam and the Advanced Placement program, has also named Catherine McAward Pohlman its new senior vice president for strategy, development, and marketing. Ms. Pohlman is a former president of the Harcourt Brace International Education Group, a publishing company based in New York City.
