Tom Mooney

Tom Mooney was elected and sworn in as the president of the 25,000-member Ohio Federation of Teachers at the organization’s convention in April. Mr. Mooney, 45, also serves as a vice president of the American Federation of Teachers.

Iris Metts

Iris Metts, the superintendent of the 129,000-student Prince George’s County, Md., schools, has been named by Secretary of Education Richard W. Riley to the National Commission on Mathematics and Science Teaching for the 21st Century.


The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People has named Hiewet Senghor as the national director of its youth and college division. Ms. Senghor, 24, will oversee youth councils for the Baltimore-based civil rights group.

Herbert W. Garrett will leave his post as the superintendent of the 22,700-student Henry County, Ga., school system in July to become the executive director of the 350-member Georgia School Superintendents Association.


The U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum has chosen Daniel Napolitano as the coordinator of the Mandel Teacher Fellowship Program, which selects 25 secondary school teachers each year to prepare as leaders of Holocaust education. Mr. Napolitano previously taught history and religious studies at Georgetown Preparatory School in Bethesda, Md.


Charter Schools USA has appointed Julian Gazzano Jr. as its regional education officer for Florida. The Fort Lauderdale, Fla.-based company currently runs four charter schools in that state and plans to add three more in August. Mr. Gazzano, 55, previously served as the superintendent of the 360-student Tuckahoe Common School District in Southampton, N.Y.
