Betty G. Mason, the first African-American and the first woman to serve as the Oklahoma City schools superintendent, will retire in June. She was named interim superintendent of the 38,000-student district in late 1992 and became superintendent last year.
Michael C. Ferguson, Delaware’s former state budget director, has been named the deputy state superintendent for administration, finance, and legislation. Mr. Ferguson succeeds James L. Spartz, who retired over the summer. ... The Indiana 4-H Foundation has inherited $905,000 from a former teacher who died in 1992. Mary B. McKinzie, who was 95 when she died, left the money because she was pleased with the foundation’s youth programs for leadership and life skills, according to the lawyers for her and her husband’s estate. Indiana has the nation’s fifth-highest 4-H enrollment, with 265,000 students in 1993, the latest year figures were available. The bequest nearly triples the foundation’s funds, said Chris DeGraff, the executive vice president of the Indiana 4-H Foundation. ... Joseph Shenker announced he will leave his post as the president of the Bank Street College of Education at the end of this academic year. He has been president of the New York City college since 1988, and served as president of La Guardia Community College in New York for 18 years.
Frank J. Alderete was elected to his fourth term as the president of the Los Angeles County board of education. He is an executive with Workforce L.A., a group of business and education leaders seeking to improve education. Mr. Alderete also teaches business at East Los Angeles College. ... Jim Burnett was named vice president of Scott, Foresman, the Illinois-based educational publisher. ... Marvin McKinney has been named the youth-program director at the the Battle Creek, Mich.-based W.K. Kellogg Foundation. Previously, Mr. McKinney was the associate director/community scholar in residence for Michigan State University’s Institute for Children, Youth, and Families.
