New Orleans Seeking Educators, Providing Incentives

With support from the Ford Foundation, Education Week and edweek.org will follow the progress and setbacks in New Orleans over the coming school year. Visit “New Orleans Schools: Recovery and Reform.”

New Orleans, still recovering from the devastating effects of Hurricane Katrina, is at an educational turning point. To make sure this school year is a success, officials in the city’s Recovery School District are looking to attract talented and motivated teachers and school professionals from other states. To fill staff vacancies, officials have developed the following incentive package. Employees who make a three-year commitment can earn an additional $17,300.

Incentive Program
Purpose Amount
Relocation expenses Maximum of $2,500
Housing subsidy to offset
the increase in housing costs
$400/month for one year
End-of-the-year bonus
to encourage retention
$5,000/year for two years
