Nebraska high school students soon will be required to take more courses in core subjects to help make sure they are better prepared for college or work.
Gov. Dave Heineman announced the changes to the state’s minimum graduation requirements last week. The changes, the first since 1984, will take effect with the 2015 graduating class.
Nebraska students will have to take at least four years of English classes and three years each of math, science, and social studies. Many Nebraska districts already require those courses, but the state will also be requiring schools to make the courses tougher.
