Lawyers for a 17-year-old Muslim girl sued the Washoe County, Nev., school district last week for an alleged failure to take steps to stop students from harassing her.
The American Civil Liberties Union of Nevada filed the lawsuit alleging violations of Jana Elhifny’s civil rights in U.S. District Court.
Ms. Elhifny, who moved to Reno with her family last year from Egypt, dropped out of the 1,950-student North Valley High School last December, after she received death threats for wearing a hijab, or religious headscarf, according to the lawsuit.
John Albrecht, the general counsel for the 60,000-student district, denied the complaint’s allegations that educators had failed to stop the harassment.
