Audrey Cohen, the president and founder of the Audrey Cohen College, died of cancer March 10 in her home in New York City. She was 64.
In the mid-1960s, Ms. Cohen started the Talent Corps, which trained low-income people, particularly women, for such occupations as teachers’ aides and social workers. The corps grew into the College for Human Services and was renamed the Audrey Cohen College in 1992.
The college collaborates with schools in five states--Arizona, California, Florida, Mississippi, and Tennessee--to teach “purpose centered” instruction. This method puts student learning toward a single purpose at the center of instruction. (See Education Week, Jan. 25, 1995.)
About 20,000 elementary and secondary school students are enrolled in the Cohen schools, and 1,500 undergraduate and graduate students are enrolled in the college.
