The Pinellas County, Fla., school district moved the 600 students at Cross Bayou Elementary School to a school four miles away last week to avoid the swarm of protesters and media representatives gathered outside the hospice where Terri Schiavo lay dying.

Cross Bayou’s students and 130 employees were scheduled to return after their spring break to the school, next door to the hospice, on March 28, but leaders of the 113,000-student district decided the prior weekend to move classes for safety reasons.

Ms. Schiavo died March 31, 13 days after her feeding tube was removed. The brain-damaged woman was the center of a national end-of-life legal battle.

School officials hoped that classes would resume at the campus this week, said Ron Stone, an associate superintendent for the Pinellas County schools.
