The Business page story in the March 27, 2002, issue of Education Week (“Wizards and Web Sites: Diversified Scholastic Thriving”) mischaracterized Scholastic Inc.'s Literacy Place reading program. The program does in fact include phonics as its foundation. The company says its decision not to revise the program for adoption in California was based on state guidelines for reading programs that call for extensive lesson plans aligned with the state’s standards. Meeting those guidelines would have made Literacy Place specifically tailored for California but more difficult to sell nationally, Scholastic officials say.

A story in the April 3 issue on possible changes to the SAT (“Amid Criticism, College Board Considers Revamping SAT”) incorrectly reported that the Preliminary SAT requires students to write an essay. While the PSAT requires students to answer multiple-choice writing questions, an essay is not required.
