The College Board and the National Association of College Admission Counselors have issued a progress report on an effort to improve the quality of career- and college-guidance services in nine school districts.
The long-term objective of the initiative, which was funded by the Lilly Endowment, is to increase the number of students who are prepared to enter college, with an emphasis on disadvantaged students from rural and urban communities.
“Strengthening Educational Guidance and Counseling in Schools’’ features examples of how the nine districts worked to put in place the recommendations of the College Board Commission on Precollege Guidance and Counseling. These included involving parents more as their children plan for their future and providing guidance services to students at an earlier age.

California should stabilize state financial support for its public higher-education system, temporarily freeze tuition and fees, and target any new budget dollars for increasing enrollment, a draft report by the California Higher Education Policy Center recommends.
While the population of California has increased, enrollment in the state’s colleges has declined by 200,000 since 1991 as a result of budget cuts, increased fees, reduced course offerings, and institutional downsizing.

In response to federal regulations increasing state oversight of postsecondary institutions, four higher-education associations have published a guide designed to clarify the role of new “state postsecondary-review entities.’'
“Consulting With Your SPRE’’ includes a brief overview of the legislation that established the new bodies and explanations of the 15 review standards that institutions will be expected to meet.
