Calif. Schools Penalized: California’s attorney general has settled a consumer-protection lawsuit filed against an alternative high school accused of providing worthless diplomas to mainly Latinos. Bill Lockyer and the operators of the California Alternative High School reached the $500,000 settlement on March 18. The settlement orders the school to pay $400,000 to its victims, $50,000 in civil penalties, and lawyers’ fees.—J.F.
