The Boston school board has approved its search committee’s recommendation to hire Manuel J. Rivera, the superintendent of the Rochester, N.Y., schools, as Boston’s next superintendent. In a unanimous vote Oct. 4, the board backed the choice of the search committee that has been seeking a replacement for Thomas W. Payzant, who retired in June. The board also authorized its chairwoman, Elizabeth Reilinger, to begin contract negotiations with Mr. Rivera. Boston officials agreed to wait until July of next year for Mr. Rivera to begin work.
