Carmel Martin, one of U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan’s right-hand colleagues, will leave the Department of Education in April to oversee policy development at the Center for American Progress, a Washington think tank closely aligned with the Obama administration.
As the assistant secretary for planning, evaluation, and policy development, Ms. Martin has overseen creation of the agency’s blueprint for revising the Elementary and Secondary Education Act and its initiative for granting waivers of provisions under the law’s current version,.
She’s also worked on many of the department’s marquee competitive-grant programs.
Denise Forte, her deputy assistant secretary, will serve as acting assistant secretary until the job is filled permanently.
