A bill approved by a House subcommittee last week to reauthorize federal graduate-fellowship programs also allows the U.S. secretary of education to create a priority for those studying mathematics, science, and special education—areas with shortages of qualified K-12 teachers.
The bill would help graduate students preparing to become college faculty members, and who would, in turn, train highly qualified elementary and secondary school teachers in those fields.
In the current fiscal year, $30.4 million in federal aid was available for graduate-fellowship grants. The House Select Education Subcommittee approved the bill June 16 by a voice vote.
