Guns, Violence, and Student Activism: A Conversation With Emma González, David Hogg, and Others

In a panel discussion about student activism, Emma González and David Hogg of Parkland, Fla., Alex King of Chicago, and Jackson Mittleman of Newtown, Conn., discuss their roles in forging a forceful movement to stem gun violence. The panel, at the Education Writers Association national seminar, was moderated by Education Week reporter Evie Blad. They described their personal experiences, how their experiences compare, why they decided to speak out, and the change they’d like to see. They also addressed common misconceptions about young people today. In an era when schools are searching for ways to promote civic engagement and student voice, these teens provide powerful examples. The high school students’ conversation on guns, violence, school safety, and activism was moderated by Education Week Staff Writer Evie Blad. This panel took place at the Education Writers Association National Seminar at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles. EWA’s National Seminar is the largest annual gathering of journalists on the education beat.
