Starting with this year’s freshmen, every Memphis, Tenn., city school student must take one online course to graduate.
The city schools offer 28 online classes for credit to high school students and 12 in middle schools.
In each of the next four years, the district intends to spend roughly $1.4 million to expand access to online courses and another $1.2 million to increase the number of students taking Advanced Placement courses online, hoping to both increase the rigor of the coursework and prepare more students for college.
