Ron Huberman confirmed last week that he would resign as the chief executive officer of Chicago’s public schools at the end of this month after less than two years in the job.
Mr. Huberman was the third executive—following Arne Duncan, now U.S. secretary of education, and Paul Vallas, currently superintendent of New Orleans’ Recovery School District—to lead the Chicago schools since Mayor Richard M. Daley received authority to pick their leader in 1995.
With Mayor Daley now planning to retire in May, the 409,000-student school district is in the midst of transition. Mr. Daley has had control in some form over the Chicago schools since 1989, and that stability in leadership has been a key to getting many of the city’s wealthiest residents involved in education.
