Public and private school enrollment in elementary and secondary schools increased by 15 percent between 1991 and 2004, concludes a study by the National Center for Education Statistics, a division of the U.S. Department of Education.
The study—which examined data gathered by federal and state agencies and research organizations—found that public school enrollment is expected to increase by 9 percent by 2016, compared with 6 percent for private school enrollment.
In addition, it says, the number of high school graduates rose by 24 percent between 1991 and 2004, and that number is expected to increase by 5 percent by 2016.
