A new study that attempts to measure health, education, and income as three building blocks of a good life finds the most advantaged people on its educational index are white and live in the District of Columbia.
The study from the New York City-based Social Science Research Council also finds that females rate higher on the educational index than males, Asian-Americans are the highest-rated ethnic group, and New York’s 14th District, in Manhattan, is the nation’s highest-rated congressional district.
The report also notes that nationally, African-Americans have a school enrollment rate (88.6 percent) that is above the national average and equal to whites, and that there was a link between ranking high on the index and educational spending. The index’s five highest-ranked states spent an average of more than $14,500 per K-12 student. Its bottom five spent less than $900 per student.
