The superintendent of the Wake County, N.C., school district says he is resigning at the end of the school year, an announcement that shocked school board members.

A statement from the 138,000-student school system said Del Burns submitted his resignation last week. The resignation is effective on June 30. Mr. Burns became superintendent in 2006.

In his statement to the board, Mr. Burns said it was clear that he could not, in good conscience, continue to serve as superintendent. He didn’t elaborate on the reason for his departure. Mr. Burns leaves behind a new school board majority that campaigned on scrapping an economic-diversity policy in favor of neighborhood schools.
