Theresa E. Saunders was recently named the superintendent of East St. Louis School District 189 in Illinois. She started her new job this month.
Ms. Saunders, 52, replaced Lillian Parks, who had been serving as interim superintendent since the summer. The East St. Louis district, which has about 10,000 students, had not had a permanent superintendent for more than a year.
The district school board selected Ms. Saunders from a field of about 90 candidates.
Before moving to the East St. Louis district, she was the superintendent of the 4,000-student Highland Park school district in Michigan.
