The Texas House has passed a bill that seeks to prevent provocative performances by high school cheerleaders, drill teams, and dance squads. But the measure’s fate in the Senate was uncertain late last week.

Although the bill declares that student groups should not perform in an “overtly sexually suggestive” manner, it does not specify what types of dance moves or routines it would prohibit. The bill would charge local school officials with enforcing the law and punishing groups violating it.

The House passed the bill May 4 on a 85-55 vote.

Under the legislature’s rules, the Senate needed to take up the bill by the end of last week for it to be enacted in the current legislative session, which is scheduled to adjourn May 30.
