The ability to write is an increasingly important skill that needs to be given a higher priority in middle and high schools, says a policy brief by the Alliance for Excellent Education.
The Washington-based organization calls for more writing instruction in the classroom, a more creative and flexible writing curriculum, and more federal funding for literacy programs.
The brief also advocates increasing federal support for the Berkeley, Calif.-based National Writing Project, a professional-development network for teachers that is designed to improve the writing skills of students in the United States.
