The survey, by Raymond Calabrese of Eastern Illinois University and John Cochran of Oklahoma University, also reveals that:
- Academic dishonesty is “primarily a male behavior.’'
- Caucasian students are more likely to cheat than students of other racial backgrounds. Asian students are particularly unlikely to cheat.
- White males cheat for personal success, whereas females and Asians--although less prone to cheating--will consider doing it to help another student succeed.
- Students attending affluent private schools are more likely to cheat than their public school counterparts. This may be so because private school students feel overwhelming pressure to succeed.
The researchers also found that academic dishonesty is prevalent in students who feel “alienated’'-- those who say that they dislike school and feel that their school is unfair.
