As part of its “back to school” package, Reading Rockets, a multimedia initiative supported by PBS and the U.S. Department of Education, has posted a set of reading-instruction resources for first-year teachers.

The resources include 10 professional development modules covering topics such as phonic awareness, fluency, and text comprehension. Each module provides a pretest, a background discussion, instructional guidelines, and assignments. Introductory video clips are also posted.

The feature also includes a “teacher toolkit” with materials on working with struggling readers, classroom management, and the No Child Left Behind Act. For personal perspective, first-year teacher diaries are provided.

Browse the First Year Reading Program, from Reading Rockets.

Reading Rockets notes that the resources are not meant to form a curriculum. Rather, they are for use “within the context of an existing reading program.”
