An emphasis on oral-language development is one of the strengths of state prekindergarten standards, says an analysis released by the Center for the Improvement of Early Reading Achievement, located at the University of Michigan.
Standards for language, literacy, and mathematics that states are writing for their early-childhood programs are also research-based, do not inappropriately emphasize one skill over another, and can be adapted to different preschool settings, the analysis says.
