Six years after first entering higher education, 44 percent of students had not earned any certificate or associate or bachelor’s degrees, concludes a new report from the National Center for Education Statistics.

Based on an ongoing longitudinal study of students who started higher education in 2011-12, the report finds 11 percent earned an associate degree and 37 percent earned a bachelor’s degree within six years. Another 9 percent earned a certificate, and 12 percent were still working to complete a credential.

Moreover, half of students left their first two- or four-year college without earning a degree or certificate.
