Jerry L. Evans, Idaho’s superintendent of public instruction, proposed legislation earlier this year to raise teacher-certification fees from $20 to $35--and then forgot to renew his license. He became the first Idaho school official to buy a certificate at the higher rate when the measure went into effect on April 1.
“If there was anyone in the whole world who knew this was coming, it should have been me,’' said Mr. Evans, who has been an educator for 32 years.
During his visit to the United States next fall, Pope John Paul II is scheduled to spend an hour talking with Roman Catholic educators about the church’s school system.
Sister Catherine McNamee, president of National Catholic Educational Association, which is sponsoring the Sept. 12 meeting at the Superdome in New Orleans, will officially greet the Pope on behalf of Catholic-school teachers.
