George A. Keyworth 2d, President Reagan’s science and technology advisor and a noted physicist, has become the latest member of the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics board of trustees. Located in Durham, the school, which is a publicly funded boarding school for talented mathematics and science students, is the only one of its kind in the country.

As a trustee, Mr. Keyworth will help determine the future policy and activity of the school, which is also involved in numerous outreach activities for educators in the state and elsewhere.

Mr. Keyworth was appointed by Gov. James B. Hunt Jr.

Roy H. Forbes and Gordon Ziemer have been named associate executive directors of the Education Commission of the States (ecs). Their appointments are effective Oct. 1.

Mr. Forbes is currently director of the assessment and evaluation division of ecs, an educational consortium of 48 states and several territories. He is also director of the National Assessment of Educational Progress, a federally supported nationwide testing program operated under contract by ecs

Mr. Forbes, who will continue to direct the National Assessment, will coordinate all research activities for ecs.

Mr. Ziemer is currently ecs’s as-sistant executive director for administration. In his new role, he will coordinate the commission’s financial, administrative, and public-affairs activities.

The executive director of the National Parent Teacher Association, Ronald L. Smith, has resigned his post with the 5.25 million-member organization.

Mr. Smith, who had held the job less than 16 months when he stepped down last month, has been replaced on a temporary basis by Robert Woerner, the organization’s current comptroller and director of administration.

A spokesman for the national parents’s group declined to comment on the resignation.

The group has no immediate plans to find a successor for Mr. Smith, she said.
