The Center for National Policy has hired Marta L. Tellado to be its director of domestic-policy programs.

Ms. Tellado, 42, will continue to act as the president of MLT Strategies, a Washington-based public-policy consulting group she founded, while holding her new job.

The center is a Washington think tank that serves as a forum for debate on a host of public-policy issues, including those in education. The organization also works with policymakers, business officials, and legislators to find solutions to problems facing public education.

Jim E. Holt, the superintendent of the 15,000-student Fairbanks North Star Borough School District in Fairbanks, Alaska, plans to step down at the end of this school year.

Mr. Holt, 53, who became the superintendent in January 2000, said he is resigning because he wants to be a high school principal again.

Mr. Holt, who was principal of Lathrop High School before becoming superintendent, has worked for the school district for 31 years. His first position was as a student teacher in physical education.

The district’s school board started a search this month for a new superintendent

Scholastic Inc., the world’s largest publisher of children’s books, has hired Pam Abrams to be its vice president and editor in chief of the Scholastic Parent and Family Publishing division.

Ms. Abrams, 44, had served as vice president and editorial director of eToys.com, an online toy retailer now owned by Kay Bee Toys.

In her new job, she succeeds Judsen Culbreth, who was promoted to vice president and editorial director of Scholastic Family Custom Publishing.

Scholastic Inc. is based in New York City.
