Paul G. Young has been elected to serve as the president of the National Association of Elementary School Principals for the 2002-03 school year. Mr. Young, 51, will assume his one-year term leading the 28,500-member organization next July. He will continue to serve as the principal of the 400-student West Elementary School in Lancaster, Ohio. The Alexandria, Va.-based naesp provides services and information to principals from schools serving students in prekindergarten through 8th grade.

Manuel G. Nunez began a one-year term last month as the chairman of the board of the Council of the Great City Schools. Mr. Nunez, 65, succeeded Clifford B. Janey, the Rochester, N.Y., superintendent, who will serve a second term when Mr. Nunez’s chairmanship ends. A member of the school board of the 78,000-student Fresno Unified School District in California, Mr. Nunez is a retired counselor. Founded in 1956, the Washington-based council lobbies for the needs of public schools in the nation’s large urban districts.

Barry G. Gaskins

Barry G. Gaskins was elected president of the 1,800-member National School Public Relations Association last month. Mr. Gaskins, 47, is the public- information director for the 20,000-student Pitt County school district in Greenville, N.C. He will continue in that position while serving a one-year term as president of the Rockville, Md.-based NSPRA, a professional membership organization for school public-relations officials.
