Eva L. Baker has been selected to chair the National Research Council’s Board on Testing and Assessment. The board provides policymakers with scientific expertise on measurement issues in education, the workplace, and the armed services.
Ms. Baker is a co-director of the Center for Research on Evaluations, Standards, and Student Testing at the University of California, Los Angeles. She will assume the board chairmanship in September. The NRC, based in Washington, is the research arm of the federally chartered National Academy of Sciences.
Linda Weber has been hired as the superintendent of the 13,000-student Roanoke County, Va., schools. Ms. Weber, 55, previously served as the superintendent of the 2,785-student Staunton, Va., district.

Jack McGovern has been named the deputy director for program development of the Children’s Literacy Initiative. He will oversee the Philadelphia-based nonprofit organization’s programs that provide professional development for teachers in literacy instruction.
Mr. McGovern, 53, previously was the director of the lower school at the 700-student Abington Friends School in Jenkintown, Pa. He has also been a senior adviser to the Lilly Endowment’s middle-years reading-reform program.
Isa Kaftal Zimmerman has been appointed the director of the Technology in Education program at Lesley College in Cambridge, Mass. The program teaches K-12 educators ways of using technology in the classroom.
All Kinds of Minds has picked Mary-Dean Barringer to be the national director of its Schools Attuned program. The Chapel Hill, N.C.-based nonprofit institute promotes understanding of learning differences and offers programs and tools to help children with learning differences succeed in the classroom. The Schools Attuned program trains teachers to recognize and handle learning differences in their classrooms.
Ms. Barringer previously worked for the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards as its vice president for outreach and mobilization.
