U.S. Secretary of Education Richard W. Riley has appointed E. Lea Schelke and Paul Goren to the National Educational Research Policy and Priorities Board, which reviews and sets education standards and provides information to Congress on them. Ms. Schelke has been a language arts teacher at Trenton (Mich.) High School since 1981. She is also the chairwoman of the National Education Association’s professional-standards and - practice committee. Mr. Goren was a senior administrator in the Minneapolis public schools before becoming the director of the child- and youth-development program at the Chicago-based John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, a private philanthropy that helps support improvements in education, child development, and juvenile-justice services.
The National Academy of Sciences has re-elected Bruce Alberts to a second, six-year term as its president.

The 1,800-member academy offers scientific guidance to federal policymakers on education and other areas. Mr. Alberts, 60, is a biochemist at the University of California, San Francisco. As president, Mr. Alberts also holds the post of chairman of the National Research Council, a branch of the academy that conducts independent science, engineering, and health-policy studies. He also helped set voluntary national standards for science curricula.

James H. Wendorf has assumed the role of executive director of the Washington-based National Center for Learning Disabilities. Mr. Wendorf will oversee referral services, educational programs, public outreach, and legislative advocacy for the 50,000 constituents with learning disabilities the organization represents. Previously, Mr. Wendorf worked for Reading Is Fundamental Inc., a national, nonprofit literacy organization in Washington. At RIF, he supervised grant-making and technology assistance for 5,000 grant recipients, worked with corporations and foundations to develop programs, and, most recently, served as vice president and chief operating officer.
