Corrected: This article misstated the title of Charlotte Gemmel and the location of the headquarters of the Metropolitan Teaching and Learning Co. Ms. Gemmel is the president and chief operating officer of the company, which is based in New York City.

Barbara T. Cervone has become the president of What Kids Can Do Inc., a nonprofit organization based in Providence, R.I., that plans to showcase the achievements of adolescents by documenting their schoolwork.

Ms. Cervone, 53, launched the organization earlier this year with Kathleen Cushman, 51, an education journalist.

Before the launch of the new venture, Ms. Cervone served as the national coordinator for the Annenberg Challenge, an initiative based at Brown University in Providence that supports school reform projects. Ms. Cervone organized research, communications, and learning initiatives for the Annenberg Challenge’s 18 reform projects.

G. Thomas Houlihan has been appointed to the board of directors of the National Center for Educational Accountability, a nonprofit organization in Washington.

Mr. Houlihan, 51, the executive director of the Washington-based Council of Chief State School Officers, began serving on the NCEA board this month.

The NCEA uses educational performance data and classroom research to identify successful school policies and teaching methods.

The Metropolitan Teaching and Learning Co. has hired Charlotte M. Gemmel to be its president and chief operating officer.

Ms. Gemmel, who begins working for the New York City-based company this week, had served as a consultant to the president of Macmillan/McGraw-Hill, an educational publishing company based in New York City.

The Metropolitan Teaching and Learning Company is an educational publisher that provides learning materials—in prekindergarten through 8th grade—specifically for urban educators and students.
