To the Editor:

You really should speak out publicly against Sen. John McCain’s dishonest attack ad against Sen. Barack Obama in which one of Education Week’s articles is quoted out of context (“McCain, Obama Spar on Education,” Sept. 17, 2008). You probably have grounds for a lawsuit.

If Sen. McCain is elected, his administration will likely be as negative on education policy as President Bush’s has been. Sen. Obama’s education policy, I feel sure, would be more favorable to schools and teachers.

You owe it to teachers everywhere to stop Sen. McCain from misrepresenting your reporting to discredit Sen. Obama.

Editor’s Note: Like The New York Times, The Washington Post, and other news organizations, Education Week published an analysis of Sen. McCain’s ad that pointed out how it might mislead viewers, including in its use of a phrase from our March 7, 2007, article that discussed Sen. Obama’s record on education. The “Fact Check” of the ad, and of an ad from Sen. Obama that criticized Sen. McCain on education, appeared in our Sept. 17, 2008, issue.

A version of this article appeared in the October 01, 2008 edition of Education Week as Quotes and Campaign Ads
