Quality Counts: Picturing Children, Connecting Dots

To the Editor:

I very much liked your Quality Counts 2007 issue, “From Cradle to Career” (Jan. 4, 2007). The picture on the front cover, however, has a child seated in the “W” position (sitting between its feet, with knees forward and toes pointing outward). This surprised me, since in all my years of administering early-childhood programs, the one thing we’ve been told consistently is to have children avoid sitting in that position, as it is bad for their hips and posture. If children do sit that way, we have them readjust their legs.

To the Editor:

Education Week’s dedication to helping readers blend essential dots and see education from a landscape perspective took a sharper focus in Quality Counts 2007. As you continue to help us take a step back from this work of art we call public education, you help us see the collaborative patterns between themes that can be strengthened, as well as help us understand the years of work that have resulted in the outcomes we examine today. Together we can indeed decipher, discern, appreciate, and strengthen the public learning structure.
