To the Editor:
Your paper is my weekly staple of education-related news. I have been an educator for 30-plus years and continue to be as passionate as ever about the mission of public education. As we move toward the future, we should learn from the lessons of the past.
There is little new in education. Times change, but providing a strong foundation in civics and social interaction should still be balanced with the cognitive aspects of reading, writing, and math. Good citizens must learn to negotiate relationships and solve problems for the common good. Likewise, a physically fit and well-nourished student will be better able to handle the stresses and demands of modern society.
Let us not forget the balance that is needed for success in learning and in life.
