Jeffery J. Miller raises the right question with his Commentary “Can Political Participation Be Taught?” (Feb. 21, 2007). Unfortunately, however, he omits mention of the most obvious “service-learning” experience available to students: student government.
Where have all our class presidents and student councils gone?
The irony, of course, is that while academic subjects have become hands-on (or, as with the new math circles, “guess-and-check”), our behavior has become increasingly bookish.
Can political participation be taught? Of course. Nothing to it but to do it.
