A new report by the Council of Chief State School Officers outlines states’ actions to improve education.

The council prepared the report to help states assist one another in reform efforts tied to the federal Goals 2000 act.

The report summarizes, in table format, state activities regarding content, student-performance and opportunity-to-learn standards, and student assessment.

It also shows state activities in professional preparation, technology, governance and management changes, education-agency reorganization, community involvement, and the integration of social services.

Copies of the report, “State Baselines for Goals 2000 Implementation,’' can be obtained for $7.50 each from the C.C.S.S.O., 1 Massachusetts Ave., N.W., Suite 700, Washington, D.C. 20001; 202-336-7073.

Single Parents: Children living with single parents are almost as likely to be living with an unwed mother as with one who is divorced, according to a recent U.S. Census Bureau report.

The study, which is based on 1993 data, notes that 10 years ago a child living with one parent was twice as likely to be with a divorced parent as with one who never married.

Today, children living with one parent are almost equally divided between divorced and never-married parents.

Copies of the report, “Marital Status and Living Arrangements: March 1993,’' are available for $7 each from the Population Division, Marriage and Family Statistics Branch, Bureau of the Census, Department of Commerce, Washington, D.C. 20233.
