Mary Crovo has been named the deputy executive director of the National Assessment Governing Board. She has been an assistant director for test development for the board since 1989.

Ms. Crovo, 49, will succeed Sharif M. Shakrani, who is leaving NAGB on Jan. 1 to become co-director of the Education Policy Center at Michigan State University in East Lansing.

The Washington-based NAGB is a bipartisan panel that sets policy for the National Assessment of Educational Progress.
