Joan M. Raymond plans to retire in September 2006 from her position as the superintendent of the South Bend Community School Corp. in South Bend, Ind.

The district’s school board has not yet selected a replacement for Ms. Raymond, 69, who has been the superintendent of the 22,000-student district since July 2000, when she came out of retirement to take the post.

Before that job, she had been the superintendent of several districts, including the Yonkers, N.Y., schools and the Houston Independent School District. She started her career as a teacher in the Chicago Public Schools in 1957.
