The Indianapolis school board has chosen a new superintendent to lead the state’s largest district.

Eugene G. White, the superintendent of the Metropolitan School District of Washington Township in Indiana, was selected by the school board on June 4 to lead the 39,000-student district.

Mr. White will replace Duncan N.P. Pritchett Jr., who has served as the Indianapolis chief since 1997 and is retiring.
