Disaster relief. The Department of Education published, in the Jan. 22 Federal Register, final regulations governing financial assistance to local educational agencies (lea’s) to restore property damaged by disasters that the President declares “major.” Contact: Robert F. Energy conservation program. The Department of Education published, in the Jan. 20 Federal Register, proposed amendments to the grant program that provides money to increase energy conservation in schools and certain other institutions. The amendments would permit the doe to use current statistical data, such as census information, when allocating funds to the states. A hearing on the proposed amendments will be held on Feb. 2 in room GE086 of the Department of Energy, 1000 Independence Avenue, S.W., Washington. Student loans. The Department of Education announced, in the Jan. 7 Federal Register, proposed changes to the funding procedures for the National Direct Student Loan, College Work-Study, and Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant programs. These revisions would affect the procedures for allocating funds to institutions of higher education and would require verification of the information on student-aid applications. The public may comment before Feb. 22.
