A former superintendent of an intermediate school district in Michigan was convicted last week on charges of misconduct in office and conflict of interest.

James Redmond, 53, who ran the Oakland Intermediate School District, was cleared of charges of embezzlement. But he was convicted of improprieties stemming from his relationship with two companies during his nine-year tenure, which ended in 2003.

One was a technology company, of which he was chairman, which received a $500,000 contract from the district. The district provides vocational and special education services for districts in Oakland County.

Mr. Redmond is scheduled to be sentenced on March 16. He faces a maximum of five years in prison and $10,000 in fines. His lawyers said they would appeal.
