Los Angeles Unified School District officials have released the first results of a new academic-standards rule for extracurricular activities that went into effect last spring.
The rule prevents students in the 4th through 12th grades from participating in band, sports, arts groups, and other activities if their grades fall below a C average or they fail at least one course.
Records from the spring semester show that 15.5 percent of the students in these activities fell below the required standards midway through the spring semester and were excluded from extracurricular activities for the second half of the semester. Almost 30 percent of them pulled up their marks to meet the standards in the second half of the semester, said Barry Mostovoy, a school official.
Nearly 16 percent of the students in extracurricular activities had inadequate marks in the second half of the semester; those students will not be eligible for the first 10 weeks of activities this fall, he said.
