A former schoolteacher, who is now lieutenant governor, apparently has won the Democratic nomination for governor of Kentucky.
With a few precincts still uncounted, Lt. Gov. Martha Layne Collins held a slim lead over Louisville Mayor Harvey I. Sloane, the candidate endorsed by the Kentucky Education Association in last Tuesday’s primary election. Dr. Grady Stumbo, state secretary of human resources, ran a close third.
Ms. Collins, the first woman in the state to win a gubernatorial nomination, alienated the teachers’ association in 1980 by casting a tie-breaking vote in the state Senate against a collective-bargaining bill. She will face state Senator Jim Bunning in a general election this fall.
In the race for state superintendent of public instruction, Alice McDonald, who resigned as deputy state superintendent in January to campaign, won the Democratic nomination over James Graham, a former state superintendent who is now serving as state auditor. Ms. McDonald is a former teacher, guidance counselor, and county-government education adviser in Jefferson County.--pc
