President Bush has selected a former Capitol Hill aide to be the new communications chief for the Department of Education.

The White House said last week that Mr. Bush would nominate Lauren M. Maddox to be the department’s assistant secretary for communications and outreach.

Ms. Maddox worked as communications director for the Republican majority in the House of Representatives under former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich. She is currently a partner in PodestaMatton, a Washington company advising clients on political and communications strategies.

The Senate must confirm the nomination before Ms. Maddox assumes her new post. She would replace Kevin F. Sullivan, who left the department in July to become White House communications director.
