Following is a list of selected resources teachers may find useful.

Original Settlers.

When the Great Canoes Came. In this 144-page hardback, author Mary Louise Clifford tells the story of British settlement in America from the American Indian’s perspective--specifically through the eyes of Pamunkey tribal leader Cockacoeske, who relates the history of Jamestown to the younger members of her tribe. Calendar.

A Calendar of Anecdotes from American History. Each month from September to August, this wall calendar focuses on a theme from American history, such as the Civil War or the presidents. Anecdotes relating to these themes, including little-known facts, humorous incidents, and historical trivia, are provided for each day of the month. Cooking.

Cooking Up U.S. History. In this 187-page paperback for elementary school teachers, authors Suzanne Barchers and Patricia Mordan use a compilation of recipes, research, and readings to teach American history. Students perform such activities as preparing sourdough biscuits or pudding from pioneers’ recipes and creating items such as soap, candles, or ink from the colonial period. Cost: $20. American Revolution.

Drums at Saratoga. Written for students ages 8-12, this 64-page hardback focuses on the fictional life of young foundry apprentice Nathaniel Phillips during the American Revolution. His story is interwoven with the lives of several real figures, such as General John Burgoyne and General Benedict Arnold. Cost: $12.95. Women’s History.

The Day the Women Got the Vote. A photo-history of the Women’s Rights Movement--from the Civil War to the present--is provided in this 96-page paperback. Through black-and-white photographs, author George Sullivan brings into focus women’s battle for equality and their achievements in business, government, sports, the arts, and education. Cost: $6.95. Posters.

American History Time Line. This series of 10 posters presents 500 years of American history, from 1490 to the present. Color-coded time lines show historical cause and effect in such areas as education, politics, minority issues, and the settlement of American frontiers. A teachers’ guide is included. Cost: $25.95. History Simulations.

American History Simulations. Designed to teach students ages 8-12 the causes and implications of events in history, this 96-page workbook includes a number of activity and discussion ideas on such topics as the Underground Railroad, the Gold Rush, and the Old West. U.S. Presidents.

The Young Oxford Companion to the Presidency of the United States. This 304-page hardback provides presidential photos, historical illustrations, and cartoons for each presidential term from George Washington to Bill Clinton as well as sections describing the roles of the president and vice president and the creation of the presidency. The book also includes listings of presidential historical sites, museums, and libraries and sources for further reading. Cost: $35.
