Original Settlers.
When the Great Canoes Came. In this 144-page hardback, author Mary Louise Clifford tells the story of British settlement in America from the American Indian’s perspective--specifically through the eyes of Pamunkey tribal leader Cockacoeske, who relates the history of Jamestown to the younger members of her tribe. Calendar.
A Calendar of Anecdotes from American History. Each month from September to August, this wall calendar focuses on a theme from American history, such as the Civil War or the presidents. Anecdotes relating to these themes, including little-known facts, humorous incidents, and historical trivia, are provided for each day of the month. Cooking.
Cooking Up U.S. History. In this 187-page paperback for elementary school teachers, authors Suzanne Barchers and Patricia Mordan use a compilation of recipes, research, and readings to teach American history. Students perform such activities as preparing sourdough biscuits or pudding from pioneers’ recipes and creating items such as soap, candles, or ink from the colonial period. Cost: $20. American Revolution.
Drums at Saratoga. Written for students ages 8-12, this 64-page hardback focuses on the fictional life of young foundry apprentice Nathaniel Phillips during the American Revolution. Women’s History.
The Day the Women Got the Vote. A photo-history of the Women’s Rights Movement--from the Civil War to the present--is provided in this 96-page paperback. American History Simulations. U.S. Presidents.
The Young Oxford Companion to the Presidency of the United States. This 304-page hardback provides presidential photos, historical illustrations, and cartoons for each presidential term from George Washington to Bill Clinton as well as sections describing the roles of the president and vice president and the creation of the presidency.
