John N. Erlenborn, 78, who was a 10-term U.S. representative from Illinois and a longtime member of what was then the House Education and Labor Committee, died Oct. 30. A Republican, he served from 1965 to 1985, and in 1980 he was a leader in the unsuccessful effort to derail the creation of the federal Department of Education.
